Abstract

This collection of essays aims at exploring the fairytale genre by analyzing its development from oral narratives to modern adaptations and rewritings. In particular, it focuses on texts that reframe traditional stories and classical archetypes according to modern perspectives, in order to represent the changing aspects of contemporary societies. By highlighting the importance of rewritings, adaptations, translations, and illustrated versions, the essays in this collection reaffirm the natural predisposition of the fairytale genre to the intertwining of cultural and literary aspects. A further look is devoted to the contemporary intelligibility of fairytales, in order to frame the fairytale’s narrative structure as a metaphorical language, in which verbal polysemy discloses the underlying meanings and semantic facets that allow for the intersection of different logical plans. In this regard, authors maintain that investigating the semantic structure of fairytales provides a further link between the traditional story and the contemporary world.
