The book is a study in the cultural history of the metaphor CRIMINALS ARE ANIMALS. It analyses literary texts from Shakespeare to Lombroso and links the use of the metaphor in the literary genre and in legal and academic contexts. It shows that the metaphor dehumanises the other and may lead to mistreatment of prisoners, terrorist suspects and the poor.
