The paper takes the perspective of Complex Dynamic Systems Theory to examine the dynamics – affective and cognitive – of L2 learners’ willingness to communicate. It offers a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the dynamics of the willingness to communicate, as well as of its interaction with measures of speech fluency. It finds that there is a largely bi-directional interaction between the willingness to communicate and fluency in L2.
