Abstract
Armed with the theory of cognitive metaphor, by means of statistic analysis and text analysis, this paper first makes a statistic analysis of the frequency of some body organs, such as eyes, head, hand, mouth, etc., and then, as a case study of “eyes” in Ulysses, summarizes and discusses some five types of cognitive metaphors of “eyes”, such as THE EYES ARE CONTAINERS FOR THE EMOTIONS, SEEING IS TOUCHING/EYES ARE LIMBS, THE EYES ARE GLOWING OBJECTS, THE EYES ARE OTHER OBJECTS, and lastly explores their cognitive structures, functions and implications in their specific contexts, so as to demonstrate the systematicness and mechanisms of cognitive metaphor, which is conducive to understanding Joyce’s metaphorical mind, philosophy of language and narratology of the body.
