Abstract

This paper focuses on the multiple readings of metaphors in literary texts. The methodology used is interpretative and employed the 'Group-Think aloud' research technique. The data consisted of a class discussion of a poem by Drummond de Andrade ('The Pulverized Mountain'). The paper analyses the various interpretations presented by readers of the final verses. The incongruities in these verses represented a challenge to the reader. The author argues that while the interpretations appear to be chaotic and complex, they can be organized in inferential chains co-constructed by metonymic and metaphoric processes.
