This paper revisits some of the problems presented by metaphor in translation from a cultural perspective. By comparing Chinese and Western cultures, the author points to a number of cultural differences which can be appreciated in the language, namely: the influence of religion and mythology, the influence of aesthetic standards and customs, the influence of literature on metaphorical concepts, and the influence of region and history. The author also comments on the different procedures the translator could adopt for the translation of metaphor.
