Abstract

Based on content analysis methodology, the present paper gathers the metaphorical perceptions of 320 pre-service teachers regarding philosophy. 115 metaphors were identified and grouped into eight distinct categories: Philosophy as an Encompassing Field (e.g. ‘philosophy is like a tree […]’), Philosophy as a Subjective Field (e.g. philosophy is like a cameleon), Philosophy as a Critical Field (e.g. ‘Like a curious child philosophy constantly asks questions […]), Philosophy as a Guiding Field (e.g. ‘I compare philosophy to a guide helping people to reach what is right and beautiful’), Philosophy as a Knowledge Producing Field (e.g. ‘Just like the way heart pumps blood to the organism, philosophy pumps knowledge to the other fields’), Philosophy as a Rational Field (e.g. philosophy is like a car), Philosophy as a Process of Seeking (e.g. ‘[…] like ants philosophy is constantly in a quest’), Philosophy as a Difficult Field to Understand (e.g. philosophy as a labyrinth).
