Abstract

Amoraritei provides an analysis of the metaphor system underlying the French terminology in enology. The key metaphor Amoraritei identifies is WINE IS A PERSON. A number of more specific metaphor clusters are derived from this global metaphor: The composition of a wine is metaphorised in terms of body parts (e.g. 'le corp du vin' (the body of the wine), 'la chair du vin' (the flesh of the wine); properties of a wine are metaphorised in terms of physical properties and states of the body (e.g.' faible' (weak), 'fatigué' (tired); 'jeune' (young). Furthermore, Amoraritei observes the frequent personification of wine as a woman, with a marked sexual connotation. Other terms in enology relate metonymically to body parts. The paper's theoretical background is the conceptual metaphor framework in the tradition of Lakoff & Johnson. For some of the items included in the study, an additional analysis in terms of semantic features is given. (Frank Polzenhagen)
