Abstract

Following a survey of the literature devoted to metaphor translation and translators' metaphorical competence, three interconnected experimental studies are reported in which postgraduates at the Copenhagen Business School (N = 17) rendered a text from a Danish business affairs magazine in German while their ability to recognize and adequately translate metaphors was investigated. Ss were also asked to give "yes" or "no" answers to a questionnaire testing their metaknowledge of translation and the linguistic and pragmatic aspects of metaphor rendition in another language. The quantitative data on the possible correlation between metaphorical and translational competence were tested in a qualitative study where the quality of metaphorical rendition and the total translation product were compared by eleven native German speakers. It is found that Ss lacked a macrostrategy that would enable them to produce high quality translation and render the metaphors adequately in the target language. Although able to recognize the linguistic form and dimension of metaphors, they experienced difficulties with the pragmatic-cognitive aspect of their processing into another language.
