Abstract
Around the 1980s, researchers from various genres reconsidered the essence of metaphor, delving into the underlying conceptual attribute and cognitive nature, which launched a "metaphor revolution" on a grand and giant scale. A brand-new membership of a mental mode and cognitive device has replaced the tradition of metaphor rhetoric, reaching an unprecedented height and status. This historical transition offers us a perspective to reflect on onomatopoeia, one of the traditional figures of speech. The research indicates that onomatopoeias in contemporary Chinese and English share the origins of sounds, sound-meaning associations, and semantic categories, and that they embody discrepancies in syllable structures, word creation and grammatical functions. Experientialist realism is thus in an attempt to interpret the convergence of their own, and cultural models has been adopted to unveil the divergences, aiming at infusing new vitality into the study of onomatopoeia as well as enhancing its layer and level in man's mentality and philosophy of mind.
