Abstract

The purpose of this article is to develop a more substantive understanding of profundity by elaborating the concept profound by use of metaphor. Deepening and enriching our understanding of the profound will contribute to a theory-building process intended to begin to develop a profound learning theory (Kroth & Carr -Chellman, 2020). Those who have studied lifelong adult learning, transformative learning, andragogy, critical theory, and other prominent adult learning frameworks are likely to question the need to introduce a different perspective, in this case profound learning, into the field. It is a valid question. The worth of this line of inquiry, which we believe may complement or add to some existing gaps in adult learning theory, will play itself out over time. At the very least, looking at the process of and practices for procuring more substantive understanding and knowledge over a lifetime may add to or reorient existing theory and research. Seeking and immersing oneself in profound learning, we contend, has a different connotation and scope than transformational learning, for example. Introducing the importance of disciplines, routines, and practices in order to develop deeper learning over time, we believe, adds a useful, agentic perspective to discussions in the field (Carr-Chellman & Kroth, 2017). Metaphors are figures of speech that compare different things. Similes are different than metaphors because they use terms such as like, as, or than to make a comparison. Metaphors make this comparison using a figurative instead of a literal term (Hale, 1999). Here, metaphors were employed to help develop a more nuanced, more conceptually rich understanding of profundity. This discussion is not an exhaustive review of related metaphors but a beginning exploration. First, existing definitions of profound and deep were synthesized in order to enrich the understanding of profound, which is often simply described as depth or deep. The concept of profound was then fleshed out by reviewing and integrating qualities of related metaphors.
