Banks, David. 1994. Clause organization in the scientific journal article. Tópicos del Seminario 17 (2(38)) : 4–16. 13 pp.

Abstract

Various clause structures are examined in relation to information structure in scientific journal articles. Clausal examples are taken from 11 articles in 'Oceanologica Acta', drawing from the areas of physics, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and palaeontology. It is asserted that passive voice is used in metaphorical clauses in order to present new information as the climax. Clefting, inversion, extraposition, and existential clauses are other structural forms found in these articles that affect presentation of information.
