Abstract

The contributions in the book can be arranged into two main groups, which are reflected in the table of contents: (a) those whose main focus is a general theoretical discussion of the nature of metaphor or metonymy, or their interaction; (b) those which consist of a case study, or a series of case studies, aimed at investigating the effect of conceptual metaphor or metonymy on some aspect of language structure and language use (polysemy, grammar, discourse). But, in fact, it is impossible to fit all the papers neatly into these categories. On the one hand, most of the papers assigned to the first group also include one or more detailed case studies, and, on the other hand, most of the authors in the second group also make some general claims about metaphor and/or metonymy on the basis of their research.
