Abstract

Discusses the exhibition 'Documenta 12' on show in Kassel, Germany (16 June-23 Nov. 2007), featuring works curated by artistic director Roger M. Buergel and his wife chief curator Ruth Noack. The author comments on the curators' unwillingness to adequately theorise their exhibition, and their use of personal preferences and arbitrary connections. He examines some of the textile metaphors in works in the Museum Fridericianum, with reference to Atsuko Tanaka, Sheela Gowda, Hu Xiaoyuan, Trisha Brown and Hito Steyerl, queries Buergel's 'Migration of Form', and considers how works are contextualized according to formal resemblances and affinities rather than cultural and geographic principles, with reference to art historian Aby Warburg. He comments on the sculptural works in the Documenta Halle by Cosima von Bonin and Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, criticises the architectural infrastructure of the Aue Pavilion and Neue Galerie and refers to works by Saâdane Afif, Zoe Leonard and Lukas DuwenhÃgger. He considers that the emphasis on the exhibition as a medium tends to make it more important than the individual works, and concludes by expressing his disappointment at a missed opportunity.
