Abstract

This study investigated the effects of metaphors on political attitudes. Participants read a metaphorical description of a political party and subsequently filled out a questionnaire about this party. Results indicate that the participants' ideas and attitudes were systematically influenced by the metaphorical description. However, some aspects of the vehicle were more easily transferred to the tenor than others, and different tenors favored different aspects of the vehicle. The persuasiveness of aspects with behavioral consequences was especially dependent upon the tenor. (Jan Bosman)
