Abraham, Werner. 1998. Linguistik der uneigentlichen Rede: Linguistische Analysen an den Rändern der Sprache. Tübingen: Stauffenburg. 360 pp.

Abstract

Abraham's book deals with figurative speech. Two chapters are devoted to metaphor. A linguistic analysis of metaphor is an inherent part of the analysis of language use. Metaphors can be explained with meaning associations. With metaphor there is a meaning transfer of syntactically correctly related words. Abraham looks at minimalistic and maximalistic views of literal and figurative language. He describes a series of pragmatic conditions for metaphor. In chapter 10 he looks at synesthesia as multidimensional metaphor. With metaphor some associations in images are taking place. There is an encyclopedic transfer. (Sabine De Knop)
