Abstract

The author describes the dance performance 'Kagemi: Beyond the Metaphor of Mirrors' performed by the Japanese dance company Sankai Junku, directed, choreographed and designed by Ushio Amagatsu with music by Kako and Yochiro Yoshikawa and performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music Next Wave Festival in Brooklyn, New York, in 2006. The author describes the dance as the unfolding of consciousness through the metaphor of mirrors, notes that the form of Butoh dance was developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s in post-war Japan as a form of rebellion against traditional culture and artistic traditions.
