Abstract

The phenomenon of Hong Kong English is described. Examples of loan and metaphor from Chinese in a popular English-language newspaper, and examples of political expressions borrowed from the Chinese language, are identified. It is suggested that the English produced in this context functions in various ways in Hong Kong society; it provides local color, enhances "Chineseness," and operates as a distancing device and as coinage to meet the demands of the sociocultural situation.
