Abstract

The study book "Analogie und Metaphor" differs from countless other publications on visual speech in two respects: 1. It combines suggestions from ancient rhetoric with achievements in modern linguistics and philosophy, so that the drafts of the classics are integrated into a more solid theoretical framework be able. 2. It traces the various manifestations of pictorial speech back to a common deep structure: analogy, understood as the validity of a common descriptive content for two different objects. The differentiation of the concept of analogy - e.g. into single and multi-digit as well as trivial and non-trivial analogies - proves to be the key both to the linguistic understanding of the phenomenon of imagery and to the interpretation of individual linguistic images, for example in literature. In this respect, this textbook is of interest to both linguists and literary scholars.
