This dissertation will discuss what Eggins and Martin (1997) have identified as the central concern of register and genre theory, i.e. 'how context gets into text.' An analysis of two translations of Carolyn Parkhurst's' The Dogs of Babel' - my own and a published one by Kathrin Razum (2004) - will show how the respective translator's aesthetics and ideology have shaped the translation of subgenres featured in the novel, i.e. puns, letters and poems. For my translation, my reading of the novel itself as a translational metaphor will be shown to be of central importance to the translation process. (LLBA, Accession Number 200707483, (c) CSA [2007].
