Abstract

A 15-unit instruction series in English as a second language proposed for German high schools uses the metaphor - whose essence is understanding and experiencing one kind of thing in terms of another - to teach students the analysis and interpretation of target-language materials. The film 'Dead Poets Society' is used and students work with the various metaphorical meanings of home as they analyze dominant and marginal features of the metaphor and correlate them with the movie and the notion of school/prison.
