Abstract

From a historical point of view figures of speech have been described with notions like acceptance, extension and value. Douay describes figures of speech from a pragmatic and semantic perspective. She concentrates on figures like the antanaclasis (a word x at a time of speech t + 1 does not necessarily have the same meaning as at a time t) and the paradiastolis (what a particular speaker calls x can be called y by another speaker: "Your heroes are murderers"). These figures are more interesting than indirect descriptions of objects by metaphor or metonymy. (Sabine De Knop)
