Abstract
This paper situates the word 'frame' as it is used in frame semantics within a merging of two separate traditions in which the word has been used as a key concept. In a cognitive science tradition, where it shares space with schema and script, it concerns the implicit conceptual structures which humans invoke to shape and interpret their experiences. In a linguistic tradition, the word has been specifically associated with the meanings and classification of words. Research in frame semantics establishes conventional associations between lexical items or grammatical patterns and the frames which underlie their meaning and motivate their use; the purpose of the "FrameNet" project is to show how the frames evoked by lexical units contribute to the interpretation of language texts.
