Abstract

The characteristics of Jose Marti's political language are analyzed and a profound unity between semantic content and expressive form is noted. The metaphorical use of the word 'patria' (fatherland) and related terms ('Cuba', 'pueblo' (the people), 'país' (country)) in political discourse published by Marti in the years 1892-1895 is studied and reiteration is found to be his favorite rhetorical figure. Three types of lexical-semantic repetition are distinguished: (1) repetition of the same word, (2) repetition via synonyms, and (3) repetition via word compositions and phrases.
