This paper takes the position that space plays a fundamental role in various grammatical processes. It analyses the phenomenon of prefixation in Polish, specifically, the construction of compound verbs from a verbal lexeme and a prefix derived from a spatial preposition. The study of these elements using different cognitive apparatuses, viz. image schemata, connectionist networks, and Blending, shows that the spatial notions underlying the meaning of the prefixes determine the new sense of the compound verb.
