Gumpel's work is interesting in that it tries to blend a phenomenological linguistics (qua Ingarden & Heidegger) with a Peircian semiotic analysis, but her work is made nearly utterly inaccessible due to her obtuse and polemical writing style. Nonetheless, the preface, introduction and especially the bibliography make interesting reading. (Tim Rohrer)
