Abstract

Four metaphors appearing commonly in the US media and in public speeches to dramatize illiteracy are described: (1) the school metaphor, (2) the medical (and industrial) metaphor, (3) the military metaphor, and (4) the banking metaphor. Our choice of metaphors and the problems associated with metaphors in the media, as related to competing stakeholders, are discussed as well.
