Abstract

The author discusses the work of Austrian-born critic and artist Rainer Ganahl, who now lives and works in New York. She discusses Ganahl's artistic development following his training in Vienna, explaining that his work can be branded as conceptual but that his writings form an important part of his oeuvre. She highlights Ganahl's first forays into mural works in the 1990s, which reproduced the iconography of computers, yet used them not as new media per se but rather as a metaphor of the biased way in which knowledge is presented. Since 1995, Ganahl has been developing a work entitled 'S/L (Seminar/Lectures)', an archive of photographs taken by the artists during different university seminars in the U.S.A. and Europe in which he has participated. She stresses the social projection of Ganahl's art work. (LLBA, Accession Number 00493793, (c) CSA [2008]. All rights reserved.)
