Abstract

This paper compares the metaphorical use of path and road in the British National Corpus with peoples’ (American English) mental imagery of their embodied experiences with these artifacts. Irrespective of American versus British English speakers, the results showed strong commonalities between speakers’ intuitions and language data; this shows that embodied experiences play a significant role in the conceptualization and metaphorical use of paths and roads.
