Abstract

It is often assumed that the structure of space to time metaphors crucially involves the notion 'now'. Two metaphors in which this notion plays a crucial role are widely recognized: Moving time, in which times move from the future toward ego, and Moving Ego, in which ego moves toward the future. This paper is about a less well-known distinction within Moving Time between a metaphor that involves the notion 'now' as part of its structure (ego-based) and one that does not (field-based). Previous published work on this topic has focused on linguistic evidence. The current paper discusses considerations of experiential motivation and evidence from psychology that bear upon the ego-based/field-based distinction. (Kevin Moore)
