Abstract

This study illustrates how metonymy in image and text work together to produce dominant ideologies in US media discourse, through the multidisciplinary analysis of articles in online US newspapers reporting crimes committed by Wall Street/CEOs and Latino migrants from a critical discourse analysis and multimodal perspective. Metonymies are examined which combine to negatively ‘Other’ Latinos and the positive representation of Wall Street/CEOs. Results from this study help to highlight the importance and ideological potential of metonymy in media discourse contributing to the public's conceptualisation of these groups.
