Abstract

This article presents an introduction to the metaphor of the house as a way of representing the human body as employed by Tobias Cohen at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The author contends that Cohen presents the conceptualization of the human body as a distillery. He further argues that this kind of metaphor is also related to Cohen’s communal experience, and suggests that his personal history is key to understanding his illustration. The article provides an overview of Cohen’s life, an account of the bibliography on the book in which such an illustration can be found, and finally, a discussion about the function and significance of this metaphorical illustration.
