This paper studies all the metaphors that make up the meaning of MAGIC in a fantasy novel, where it becomes a central concept, as pervasive in this secondary universe as the concepts of LIFE or LOVE are in the real world. We will analyse the complex network of metaphors, absolutely structured and hierarchically organized, that provides us with a global mental image of MAGIC. We will also see that all these metaphors are coherent with any previous schemata in the reader's mind and all of them can be reduced to a subtle, very primary metaphor in our cognitive and cultural models, the megametaphor (Werth 1994, 1999), that underlies the whole text and whose main function is making the text a coherent unit, as well as supplying credibility to the fiction.
