Abstract

The rich tradition of attempts at reading and interpreting the meaning of the verses 736-738 in Hesiod's 'Theogony' is noted, and some proposals (e.g., Schoemann, F., 1846; Paley, F. A., 1861; Kirk, G. S., 1956; Stokes, M., 1962) are outlined. It is argued that the relationship between language and 'Weltanschauung' be taken into account and the meaning of the fragment interpreted as language use shifted from the concrete to figurative and poetic. The basic, spatial dimensions of the cosmogony presented in Hesiod's poem are identified, showing how the original, concrete topographic quantitative meanings were replaced with metaphorical representations in the poet's artistic semantics.
