Abstract

This paper suggests that Grady's (1999) classification of conceptual metaphors should be elaborated by distinguishing between "physically-motivated resemblance metaphor" and "socio-cultural metaphor" within "resemblance metaphor". Takada et al. (2000) posited "socio-cultural metaphor" whose motivation and mapping both involve socio-cultural values. They demonstrated its validity by analyzing examples of DAUGHTER IS COMMODITY in Japanese. The present study supports this sub-classification of resemblance metaphor by adding evidence from Korean and Japanese SEXUAL EXPERIENCE IS USING COMMODITY metaphor. Examples include 'ttakci tteta' (to take off the label) in Korean and 'fude orosi' (to start using a writing-brush) in Japanese, both meaning 'to experience sexual intercourse for the first time'. In both languages, examples of this metaphor are properly interpreted only when a man is the agent. This reflects a conspicuous property of sexual metaphors, which is a clear asymmetry between male and female in terms of agency. By analyzing these kinds of metaphorical expressions, we conclude that it is valid to posit socio-cultural metaphor as a separate class in resemblance metaphor. Unlike other kinds of metaphors, it involves socially and culturally-interpreted similarities between the source and target concepts that are crucial to the motivation, the process, and the properties of mapping.
