Abstract

The theory of Translation Studies has become a major discipline. Contemporary Translation Theories examines five of the new approaches – the American translation workshop, the ‘science’ of translation, Translation Studies, polysystem theory, and deconstruction – all of which began in the mid-1960s and continue to be influential. In this critical overview of recent developments in translation theory, Gentzler explores the strengths and weaknesses of each method, tracing the connections and overlaps between the different schools of thought. He illustrates the importance of translation theory to the debates on the nature and language and raises important theoretical questions challenging the assumptions of the leading translation theories.
