Abstract

This paper reflects the content of the workshop on quality in simultaneous interpreting held at the international conference on interpreting in Turku. Two main issues emerged as the most controversial: (1) Quality for whom – who of the potential participants in the interaction involving an interpreter should be the ultimate judge of the quality? (2) Methodologies for studying quality – What are the best methodologies for quality assessment? The discussion underlined once again the virtual absence of any fruitful exchange between SI research and experimentation conducted in neighbouring fields. It would seem that SI research might benefit from rigorous analyses of the output, of comparisons with the input and of the effect on users.
