Abstract

This edited volume is a collection of articles written by famous translators of poetry and prose from various languages into English. As far as material is concerned, the language of translation is the only thing all these articles have in common; as to the authors' position, they are united by an understanding of the process of translation as creative work. The authors do no deny the notion 'text', but they draw the conclusion that it is impossible to arrive at the one 'final', ideal version of literary translation, because of the diversity of the world in which there are no coinciding phenomena. Translation is alawyas a matter of choice, but that choice can never be final, whether for a translator himself or for other translators.
