Abstract
Different changes certainly explain the diversity of contexts in which professional translation is practised, the variety of disciplines dealt with by translatologists, the differing relevance of the studies conducted and the diversity of research discourses. Are there any obvious points of convergence behind this diversity? Do all scholars share common assumptions, and do they have the same expectations whether they focus on translation or on interpretation? This chapter argues that the current paradoxes of our field do not imply insurmountable contradictions. They might be a sign of vitality.
