Abstract

In this chapter, the author discusses the paradox posed by the title of the seminar, Crossing Barriers and Bridging Cultures. He wants to distinguish between societal multilingualism, i.e. the existence of more than one language in a community, and individual plurilingualism, or the ability of the individual to communicate through more than one language.
