Abstract

The European Union’s multilingualism reflects a historical and natural choice. Right from the start, the EU officially opted for linguistic diversity. When the European Communities made their choice, they were clearly voicing a political determination to preserve, protect and promote multilingualism. To cope with the growing need for translation and interpretation, the European Union makes a strong appeal to freelance translators. In this article, the author discusses their contribution to the multilingualism of Europe’s institutions.
