Abstract
There is no doubt that developments in computer technology since the beginning of the 1980s have had a substantial impact on the work of the translator. The object of the translation exercise of course remains unchanged: to produce in one language a fluent and accurate rendering of a text written in another language. With the growth of the European Union, an increase of the number of staff was necessary, not only within the translation services, but also within the services for information science. Not only extra staff was needed, but also new technologies and extra support. In this chapter, the author gives an account of the progressive introduction of computer-based technologies in translation related to the specific example of translation at the European Parliament.
