In this chapter, the author examines, in the light of the ongoing technical, social and political changes, how the huge stock exchange of languages, the Translation Service of the European Commission, is equipping itself for the challenges of the 21st century. The author discusses the evolution from handwriting to hypertext, on-line translation, the resurrection of the word, and the problem of quality.
