Abstract

The author analyses and compares five French (partial) translations and an adaptation of Petronius' Satyricon (17th/18th century) - using two selected episodes - in the light of contemporary translation theory and of poetic normative concepts. Starting from the notion that translations might be considered to be a special kind of literary reception and therefore should be placed within the general history of literary reception, he tries to explain the increased reception of Petronius at that time in terms of the socio-psychological dispositions and needs of the audience at the French court.
