Abstract
While this essay is meant to address the current state of (conference) interpreting research, one could hardly hope to develop an understanding of the field by narrowing one’s view to what is happening at the start of the twenty-first century and ignoring what has gone before. The author therefore begins by highlighting some of the major landmarks in the development of what has come to be known as the discipline of interpreting studies. The subsequent discussion of the state of the art indicates some major pathways of development, singles out trends and research topics of particular interest, and lists a number of examples of research as well as sources for further reading.
