Abstract
This paper examines the translation of metatphors from English into Chinese and vice-versa, focusing on how indiviudal metaphors function in their particular context and on the loss and gain effected by shifting their cultural and linguistic basis. The metaphors examined give evidence that not only cultural experience but also the values and qualities attributed to objects and events and the metaphorical concepts which people of a community have taken for granted play an important part.
