This article contains more information on the interpreting profession. First, the author explores interpreting as an international activity between several communities. He then elaborates a competence model for interpreting, and offers some empirical contributions to the theoretical field. Pöchhacker also makes a difference between conference interpreting and community interpreting and stresses the fact that, while research within the field of conference interpreting exists since a very long time, research in the field of community interpreting is only in its infancy.
