Abstract

In this paper, an empirical research forms the starting point for an overview of the problems of community interpreting. The survey was done in 1998 at the university of Graz and gives an answer to the following question: What is community interpreting? According to Patricia Burley, community interpreting requires a great number of skills. It is grossly underpaid and has low status. It is not glamorous but demanding; it involves having a missionary spirit and developing a thick skin. In the present research, the author fully endorses this statement.
