Abstract

This paper, presented here in abridged form, as the original also includes numerous examples to support the writer’s hypotheses, follows on the initial classification introduced by Salevsky. It first appeared in The Translator in 1997, and is based on a corpus culled from the author’s twenty-two years of work as an interpreter, from numerous recordings and from the diploma theses of her graduate students. Taking on the formidable challenge of mapping the field of interpreter-mediated events in all its diversity, Alexieva adopts a prototype rather than a taxonomic approach, and attempts to categorize events in terms of two broad parameters: mode of delivery and elements of the communicative situation.
