Abstract
The aim of the present article is to confront the two prevailing forms of film translation with one another, being sub-titling and dubbing. The author looks into a number of factors which determine the form of film translation such as legislation, the size of the linguistic area or tradition, defines the concepts of sub-titling and dubbing and discusses a number of arguments for and against both dubbing and sub-titling. The article also contains the conclusions drawn from a NOS (Netherlands Broadcasting Foundation) inquiry.
